Obtaining Your Credit Report

By Greg Wilder | August 12, 2016 | Category Blog

Many of us view our credit report as a set of numbers that indicates our financial health, including whether we pay our bills on time, whether there are loans and mortgages we have to cover, and whether we are following up our credit payments. What we forget is that the report has a deeper link to our lives than just reflecting our financial status.

The Importance of a Credit Report

A poor credit score, which is generally considered to be anything below 600, can prove to be a real obstacle. It can prevent money lending institutions and private lenders from providing you with a line of credit. It can prevent insurance agencies from insuring your health; and it can even prevent employers from giving you a job. If you have been planning to buy your dream house, a negative credit score can prevent you from obtaining a mortgage.

Take Control of Your Credit Report

Taking control of your credit report can be extended to taking control of your life. By accessing and monitoring your financial numbers, you become more aware of your spending behavior. You also realize whether you are sticking to a budget or not. Having a credit report in your hand enables you to manage your money better and make wiser financial decisions. But the more important point is that you can safeguard your financial report as well as your credit history.

Obtaining Your Credit Report

You are entitled by law to receive one free copy of your credit report from each credit bureau once every 12 months. Here is how to obtain yours:

  • Visit the Annual Credit Report website and fill out the online form available.
  • You will be required to fill in details that include your Social Security number, date of birth, and proof of address.
  • There is an option to choose the number of credit reports you wish to receive. You are allowed one report per credit bureau. It is advisable to choose one from each bureau available.
  • After you fill out a form, a screen will appear that displays your credit report. You should print out the report immediately, or you may lose the opportunity to obtain your credit report for another 12 months.

You can also call the Annual Credit Report Organization (1-877-322-8228). After answering a few questions that will verify your identity, you will receive your credit report within a few weeks.
